  • Burglar Scared Off By Alarm

Officers were going door-to-door Saturday night looking for a burglar who ransacked a Paradise Valley home. But the burglars were scared off by an alarm.

    They came up empty-handed.

When they arrived, they found signs that an intruder had forced his way into the home.

The homeowner said jewelry was missing. There were no signs of any suspects.

Police were still investigating two other home burglaries that happened on Jan. 12. In one of them in the 6800 block of N. 47th Street, burglars were scared off by an alarm.

The other burglary occurred at a vacant home in the 4500 block of E. McDonald Drive. The suspects forced their way inside and appeared to be living there.
Police remind residents to remember to always lock doors and set alarms.

  • "It's On Us" Campaign To Stop Domestic Violence

Marquette University, like many college campuses, is not immune to campus sexual assault.

One fraternity is taking a stand to no longer be silent on the issue. The men of Kappa Sigma have joined the growing "It's On Us" campaign aimed at ending sexual assault.

It is estimated that one in five women will be sexually assaulted during her college years.

The "Its on Us" campaign was created to end sexual violence on college campuses. It's an initiative started by the White House.

"Its obviously a problem in all campuses, but for us to try and share something in our campus definitely has made not only Marquette see - that people want to make change."

A few years ago Marquette University came under fire after four student athletes were accused of raping a female student during a dorm party in 2011. The students were never criminally charged, but the case prompted the university to make changes in the way reports of sexual assaults are handled on campus.

The pledge is a personal commitment for many of these young men to not only stand up - but take action.

Being the difference is not just a college motto. The men of Kappa Sigma say being the difference starts with being the example.

"We are attempting this year to incorporate into our pledging process respect for women in our curriculum."

The homeowner called 911 on Wednesday around 11 a.m. after he received an alert on his cellphone.

The homeowner said he was watching a live surveillance camera feed of the burglar breaking into his house on Southeast Country Club Lane in Stuart, and he was able to provide arriving deputies with a description of the suspect.

Investigators believe the burglar may have been spooked after noticing the surveillance cameras.

Deputies were unable to track down the burglar and detectives are currently reviewing the surveillance video.

  • Sexual Assault Prevention Funding Bill Before Legislature

Corrin Bemis is not the University of Nebraska-Lincoln student who needs the sexual assault prevention funding in a bill introduced this session by Lincoln Sen. Adam Morfeld.

"I know the difference between coercion and consent," she told the Judiciary Committee Friday. "I know how to stand up for my peers and use my bystander intervention training to keep the people around me safe."

Bemis urged senators thinking about whether to advance the bill (LB1027) from committee to consider the freshman fraternity member in an organization that praises him for how intoxicated he got the night before. A fraternity whose members need to know the difference between safe dating norms and harassment.
Or the young mother on campus trying to get through her classes who needs a safe place to go with her son during the day. Or the young woman who is too afraid to tell her friends about her abusive partner.

Morfeld would like the state to help fund sexual assault prevention programs on Nebraska college campuses through a grant of $500,000 during each two-year budget cycle.

The bill is based on a similar program in Michigan, Morfeld said. The first year, the state had $1.5 million in requests for those grants, which were used for such things as bystander training and drink coasters that can detect whether someone has tampered with a drink.

  • No Campus Assaults-Defies Reality-AAUW

Ninety-one percent of the nation’s colleges have told the federal government there were no Campus Assaults reported on their campuses in 2014, a statistic that the American Association of University Women (AAUW) said “defies reality.”

The AAUW on Thursday assailed the federal Clery Act data, information that colleges are required to disclose about sexual violence on the nation’s campuses, including the number of sexual assaults and rapes. The AAUW said it appears colleges must be concealing such cases because there is ample research and recent polling and survey data that shows college sexual assaults are a frequent and widespread problem that touch campuses from coast to coast.

A Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation national poll in June 2015 found that about 20 percent of college-aged women and five percent of college-aged men reported being sexually assaulted across the country. A survey from the Association of American Universities — drawing responses from 150,000 students at 27 schools, one of the largest studies ever of college sexual violence — found that more than 20 percent of female undergraduates said they were victims of sexual assault and misconduct.
